Hi, there was a small colony of ants in a container of sand but, no queen. There were 2 different kinds living with each other. 8 were black and 4 were orange. Any idea why they would live together?...

No, it was way to small to even think of them. Only 1 inch of soil and ants about 3mm.Insect World's one and only overlord!

It all comes back to my oft-repeated statement: Until we identify the species involved, it will remain unexplained. So get a few specimens, give a careful description, and we'll see what we can do.
